Director, HR – Compliance-Focused Consultant

Location: Hybrid (regular travel within MA will be required)

Job Type: Tuesday - Friday from 8:30am-5pm

Education Required: Bachelor’s Degree and Juris Doctor (JD) (strongly preferred)

Pay range: $75,000 - $80,000

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced and compliance-focused Director, HR to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will provide strategic HR guidance across a variety of specialty areas, including compliance, compensation, employee relations, training, and recruiting. You will play a key role in helping our clients navigate complex HR challenges while ensuring they remain compliant with ever-evolving federal and state regulations.

This is a client-facing role requiring strong expertise in human resources law, outstanding communication skills, and the ability to evaluate and implement best practices in real-world business settings.

Key Responsibilities

Compliance & Advisory

  • Stay current with both federal and state legislation impacting HR functions.
  • Provide clear, actionable guidance to clients on compliance and HR best practices.
  • Communicate complex legal updates in a practical, understandable way to internal and external clients.

HR Audits & Risk Management

  • Conduct comprehensive HR audits to assess compliance and identify risk areas.
  • Deliver detailed recommendations and strategies to close compliance gaps and improve HR effectiveness.

Employee Relations & Performance

  • Diagnose and resolve employee relations and work performance challenges.
  • Facilitate constructive communication within organizations to promote positive employee relations and adherence to employment law.

Training & Development

  • Design and lead engaging training sessions for clients on topics such as legal compliance, supervisory skills, communication, and HR fundamentals.

Compensation & Total Rewards

  • Perform compensation planning and market analysis to develop competitive and equitable pay structures.
  • Advise clients on total rewards strategies, including salary ranges, bonus plans, and benefits alignment.

HR Support

  • Serve as a knowledgeable resource on our HR Helpline, providing real-time, evidence-based advice to association members and internal team members.
  • Provide ongoing HR support to clients through part-time HR, on-demand HR and project work as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required and Juris Doctor (JD) strongly preferred
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive HR experience , with strong focus in:

  • HR compliance
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with clients in a consultative capacity.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • High attention to detail and organizational skills.
