Position overview

Salary range: The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. The current full-time base salary range for this position is $90,100 - $111,500. 'Off-scale' salaries are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Percent time: 100%

Anticipated start: 05/01/2025

Position duration: One year, with possible reappointment based on performance and funding.

Position description

The Molecular Graphics and Computation Facility (MGCF) in the UC Berkeley College of Chemistry seeks applicants for the position of MGCF Director, who will be responsible for the overall operations of the facility, which is an integral part of the college's research infrastructure. The Director role involves supporting the college's training mission, integrating computational chemistry into the curriculum, and ensuring that students are trained in the latest research methods.

The Director is responsible for:

  1. Consulting with and providing innovative guidance to graduate students, faculty, and other researchers who require the use of scientific software in their individual research efforts.
  2. Defining facility hardware and software requirements.
  3. Obtaining grant funds to purchase state-of-the-art hardware to maintain a first-rate research environment.
  4. Administering logins, software, and associated equipment to ensure reliable and efficient facility operations.

The Director will use expert knowledge of current methods in computational chemistry as implemented in software and applied to molecular, material, and biological models to carry out the duties of this position. This includes expertise with chemical big data and machine learning theory and application. The Director may also supervise and oversee research and technical staff. The MGCF Director reports to the Executive Associate Dean in the College of Chemistry.

In addition, the Director will be responsible for managing the finances of the MGCF, which includes:

  1. Preparing annual budgets for the Executive Associate Dean and other college leadership.
  2. Monitoring monthly financial reports to ensure accurate accounting of all revenues and expenses.
  3. Participating in the periodic review and revision of the recharge rates for services.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • PhD (or equivalent international degree)

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

  • PhD in computational chemistry, bioinformatics, or closely related field
  • At least 7 years postdoctoral or similar post PhD experience
  • Significant publication record in the field
  • Experience with Large-Scale Computational Workflows
  • Training & Mentorship experience in computational chemistry and biomolecular modeling

Preferred qualifications

  • 8-10 years postdoctoral or similar post PhD experience
  • Advanced bash linux command line skills
  • System administration skills sufficient to clone systems, manage user logins, install packages, manage firewall, configure SLURM/SGE queuing system
  • Experience with molecular modeling using various software
  • Scientific programming skills including Python and machine learning
  • Experience in compiling scientific packages for a computing cluster
  • Experience mentoring graduate student and postdoctoral researchers
  • Experience in Virtual Screening and Docking Studies
  • Ability to work with interdisciplinary teams
  • Proficiency in Managing Research Data
